Earth Day 2012

April 26, 2012

We had a successful beautification day on Saturday, April 21, 2012 to celebrate Earth Day at the East San Fernando Valley Nature Parkway.
Thanks to the 45 volunteers in attendance, many who are current students from Valor Academy in Panorama City. Our commitment for community beautification project was demonstrated and the result was a clean green open space that promotes a healthier well being.
Volunteers proposed more can be done to the Nature Parkway like adding solar lighting, installing a bathroom, adding more plants along the bike path abutting LA County fence to the Pacoima Spreading Grounds. Our goal to beautify the North side of Devonshire Street was strongly advocated to begin immediately. Our vision to increase open public space continues.

Let the Good Times Roll

January 10, 2012

On Saturday, January 7, 2012 we celebrated the Grand Opening of the East San Fernando Valley Nature Parkway. Many volunteers from local nonprofits like People in Progress and Pacoima Beautiful made it a success. Together with the help of residents planted forty California native plants. We could not have accomplished the beautification project without the dedication of Tajo Landscape weeding the garden. We recognize the power music has to bring people together. Special thanks goes to Shane Coleman and his band from Heroes for Life for entertaining us throughout the celebration.

Friends of the Nature Parkway have started a tradition of commemorating four individuals who have dedicated themselves to public service. In this month that we take a moment to recognize the grand person who was Martin Luther King we want to honor those among us who follow in his steps.

Friends of the Nature Parkway recognizes that it takes partnerships in a triangular level to make our work come to fruition. Government, local community/nonprofit and businesses are that blend of changing power for the benefit of civil society.

Our first public service awardee is Al Piantanida for using every bit of strength he has and finding more from thin air to see our project through . It is strength that gives us all strength to continue our mission.

To Imelda Padilla representing Pacoima Beautiful. It is her tenacity in encouraging our youth to take action against environmental injustice that we have a strong volunteer base.

To Luis Sanchez, Sr. from the office of Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa, it is through his many years experience in public service that we were able to advocate our mission through City of LA departments and businesses. This led to creating the triangular bond for the benefit of a Nature Parkway.

And last but not least Ramiro Cisneros business owner of Tajo Landscape.
It is his business leadership and knowledge that has made our California native plants grow. His contribution to this project is invaluable.

The day was not complete until the GR818ERS took the stage and showed us their break dancing skills. It was certainly a treat to see them invite children on stage to show off the moves they got.

The last element of the event was the completion of two art pieces. One piece called “Peace on Earth” was created by Jessie Molina and Alexandra Ladieone. The other was a creation by our youth in attendance who designed the elements they would like to see included in future beautification projects.

It is our mission to increase the amount of public green space. We believe we can achieve this by collaborating diverse organizations and individuals.
Thanks for supporting the Friends of the Nature Parkway.

Peace and Live Love

Thank you Assemblymember Fuentes

August 28, 2011

Today the Friends of the Nature Parkway spent the hottest day on earth as a participant during Assemblymember Fuentes’ Fifth Annual Family Resource Fair. Many other members of the community heard about the event from local San Fernando Sun newspaper or from Fuentes’ postcard. Once again his consitituents were able to receive a health screening in addition to information from over 80 service providers.

Those that visited our informational booth were attracted to the aroma from the California native plants. Take a look at the photographs to see Panorama City Neighborhood Council (PCNC) member, Joey Soto, signing our guest sheet. PCNC, is one of our sponsors whose funds will go towards paying for our main signs. All were told to lookout for our Grand Opening Cultural Festival in January 2012. During that time we can also collect more signatures on our petition asking our City Councilmembers to install lighting along Devonshire Street.

Beautification day, another success

August 23, 2011

Many thanks go out to Tajo Landscape, Caroline Rose, Jose Arevalo, and Al Piantanida for beautifying the Nature Parkway.
On Friday and Saturday (August 19 and 20th) these Friends of the Nature Parkway picked weeds, raked, and planted succulents throughout the California native community garden. The sidewalk path is alive and well giving a therapeutic aroma to the those that use it for recreation.
Thanks so much for your support. We will plan bimonthly beautification days every third weekend of the month. Keep in touch with us.

Dodgers Night with Friends of the Nature Parkway

June 22, 2011

The Friends of the East San Fernando Valley Nature Parkway know what it means to be Green while saying Go Big Blue. Forty of the Nature Parkway’s closest friends met up at the Short Stop before taking off to see the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Florida Marlins. Before the fireworks lite up the LA sky we celebrated the Dodgers victory (3-2) when in the bottom of the 9th inning with the bases loaded Dioner Navarro hit a walk-off single to win the game for the Dodgers. Sweetness!!!

Many thanks to the lovely friends who donated funds to continue our mission of revitalizing the Nature Parkway.
